Bake a Pie in Solidarity: Celebrating March 14th with Love, Community, and a Delicious Recipe 🥧💛

good thyme gal food and lifestyle blog National Bake A Pie In Solidarity 2025

At Good Thyme Gal, I love any excuse to bake a pie, but March 14th is extra special—it’s National Bake a Pie in Solidarity Day! This day is all about coming together through the universal language of food, supporting one another, and recognizing the power that a simple homemade pie can hold.

Whether you’re baking for a friend in need, a neighbor, a community organization, or just as a reminder that we’re all in this together, today is a beautiful opportunity to share love, comfort, and kindness—one slice at a time.

So, let’s preheat those ovens, roll out some dough, and celebrate solidarity, equity, and good food with an easy, affordable, and delicious Apple Crumble Pie recipe that everyone can enjoy.

Why Baking a Pie Matters

Food is more than just nourishment—it’s connection. When we bake for others, we show that we care, that we see them, and that we are here to support them. Baking a pie in solidarity means:

🍏 Supporting food equity by using accessible and affordable ingredients.💛 Bringing comfort and joy to someone who may need a little extra love.🤝 Standing with communities in need, whether through food donations, supporting local farms, or sharing what we have.

No matter how small the act, baking a pie today is a reminder that kindness and solidarity always make a difference.

Easy & Equitable Apple Crumble Pie Recipe

This Apple Crumble Pie is simple, budget-friendly, and doesn’t require fancy ingredients—just a few pantry staples and some fresh (or even canned!) apples. It’s perfect for sharing, gifting, or enjoying with loved ones.

🌿 What You’ll Need:

For the Pie:

  • 1 pre-made or homemade pie crust (store-bought works great!)

  • 5-6 apples, peeled and sliced (use what you have—Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or even a mix)

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (or coconut sugar for a refined sugar-free option)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons flour or cornstarch (to thicken the filling)

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (helps balance the sweetness)

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1/2 cup oats

  • 1/3 cup flour (all-purpose or whole wheat)

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup butter or coconut oil, melted

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

How to Make It:

1️⃣ Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place your pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and set it aside.

2️⃣ Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.

3️⃣ Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir in the melted butter (or coconut oil) until the mixture forms a crumbly texture.

4️⃣ Assemble the pie: Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over the apples.

5️⃣ Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the crust edges start to brown too quickly, cover them with foil.

6️⃣ Let the pie cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!

Ways to Share Your Pie in Solidarity

🥧 Bake & Give – Make an extra pie for a friend, neighbor, or someone in need of a little extra love.🌍 Support Local Farmers – If possible, get your apples from a local farm, market, or food co-op to help small growers.💛 Donate Ingredients – If baking isn’t an option, consider donating baking supplies or pantry staples to a local food bank.📢 Spread Awareness – Share why today matters! Food insecurity affects millions, and access to fresh ingredients should be a right, not a privilege.

Solidarity through food is powerful. Something as simple as a pie can bring joy, comfort, and a reminder that we are stronger together.
