Why We Celebrate National Creamsicle Day 🍊🍦

Every August 14th, dessert lovers from coast to coast celebrate National Creamsicle Day, a day dedicated to the refreshing frozen treat that combines tangy orange with sweet, creamy vanilla. Originally created in the 1920s, the creamsicle was the invention of Frank Epperson, who accidentally left a flavored drink outside with a stick in it overnight. That childhood experiment eventually evolved into the frozen pops we know today.

Creamsicles are more than just a summertime snack, they’re a taste of nostalgia. They transport us back to carefree afternoons, neighborhood ice cream trucks, and the joy of sticky fingers in the summer sun. At Good Thyme Gal, we believe food should connect us to happy memories while still being accessible to all.

Equitable Homemade Creamsicle Recipe

Servings: 6 | Cost: Around $5 | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Freeze Time: 4–6 hours

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh-squeezed or store-bought, no added sugar preferred)

  • 1 cup vanilla yogurt (dairy or plant-based)

  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for extra sweetness)

  • 1 tsp orange zest (for a citrus boost)

  • Popsicle molds and sticks

Directions:

  1. Mix the filling — In a small bowl, stir together the yogurt and half the honey or maple syrup until smooth.

  2. Prepare the orange layer — In another bowl, combine the orange juice, zest, and remaining sweetener.

  3. Layer the creamsicles — Pour a tablespoon of orange juice mixture into each popsicle mold, then add a tablespoon of the yogurt mixture. Continue layering until molds are full. This creates the signature swirl effect.

  4. Insert sticks & freeze — Place sticks into molds and freeze for at least 4–6 hours, or until completely solid.

  5. Unmold & enjoy — Run molds briefly under warm water to release your creamsicles. Serve immediately.
