September 26th is National Key Lime Pie Day, a holiday dedicated to one of America’s most iconic desserts. With its refreshing citrus tang, creamy filling, and buttery crust, key lime pie is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Whether you enjoy it in its classic form or with a twist, this dessert embodies everything we love about good food: simplicity, accessibility, and joy.
Here at Good Thyme Gal, celebrating days like this fits perfectly with our mission to highlight approachable, equitable recipes that bring people together.
Why National Key Lime Pie Day Matters

Food holidays may seem lighthearted, but they serve a meaningful purpose:
Celebrating Tradition: Key lime pie originated in Florida, where the small, tart key limes were abundant. It’s a slice of culinary history worth preserving.
Simple, Equitable Ingredients: Despite its luxurious taste, key lime pie requires just a handful of everyday ingredients: lime juice, condensed milk, eggs, and a crust. Anyone can make it ! No fancy tools required !!!
Joyful Connections: Sharing a slice of pie has always been a way to bring friends and family together. Key lime pie’s vibrant flavor sparks conversation and smiles.
This day reminds us that desserts don’t need to be complicated to be meaningful. A recipe built from accessible, affordable ingredients can still feel special enough to mark a holiday.
Equitable Recipe: Easy Key Lime Pie
This budget-friendly, no-fuss recipe captures all the tangy-sweet goodness of classic key lime pie without requiring hours in the kitchen.
Ingredients:
For the crust:
1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (about 12 crackers)
⅓ cup granulated sugar
6 tablespoons melted butter
For the filling:
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
3 large egg yolks
½ cup fresh key lime juice (or regular lime juice if key limes aren’t available)
1 tablespoon lime zest
For the topping:
1 cup heavy cream, whipped (or whipped topping)
Extra lime zest for garnish
Instructions:
Prepare the Crust: Combine graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter. Press firmly into a 9-inch pie pan. Bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, then let cool slightly.
Make the Filling: In a bowl, whisk together condensed milk, egg yolks, lime juice, and zest until smooth. Pour into the crust.
Bake the Pie: Bake for 15 minutes, or until the center is just set. Cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Add the Topping: Spread or pipe whipped cream over the chilled pie and garnish with lime zest.
Serve & Enjoy: Slice, share, and savor!
✨ Equity Tip: If key limes are expensive or unavailable, bottled key lime juice or standard limes work beautifully. The pie remains just as refreshing and accessible.
